  • Hospitals Looking to Cut Costs

(I-SoftwareNews.Com, August 08, 2013 ) Singapore, Singapore -- The Better Procurement, Better Value, Better Care: A Procurement Development Program for the NHS, has published an announcement today from the health minister Dr. Dan Poulter, which outlined cases that are aimed to cutting wasteful spending. In addition to exposing the numbers, temporary staff and supply spending will be cut down to 75% of the current total. More bulk deals will be utilized to buy ticket items that include MRI scanners and support systems.

Poulter made the announcement, saying: “We must end the scandalous situation where one hospital spends hundreds of thousands more than another hospital just down the road on something as simple as rubber gloves or syringes, simply because they haven’t got the right systems in place to ensure value for local patients.”

Poulter continued by emphasizing: “This kind of poor resource management cannot go on and this radical new strategy will help our NHS get a grip on wasteful spending to drive real change and improved procurement practices so that more of our NHS’s resources can be spent on frontline care.”

According to the administrators, the plans will cultivate high-profile persons from private sectors appointed as 'procurement champion', and the individual(s) chosen of the position will lead the overall reform efforts through the creation of an agenda. The individual(s) will be supported by senior reps from both the NHS and the industry itself. Poulter will lead the senior representatives.

Lord Hunt, who is president of the Health Care Supply Association, stated: “Procurement can make a vital contribution to the delivery of better patient care through the negotiation of the best commercial supply arrangements, in conjunction with clinical colleagues and innovative suppliers. I am delighted that central to the report are plans to promote leadership and the development of capability and capacity within the NHS procurement function.”
