  • Hong Kong's Digital Future Starts in September When IT Experts Gather for HKICC2008

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 04, 2008 ) Hong Kong - Economic developments combined with technological breakthroughs offer new opportunities and as well as threats to Hong Kong's digital future. This was the message that Sunny Lee, the President of the Hong Kong Computer Society delivered at a press conference to launch the upcoming Hong Kong International Computer Conference (HKICC), entitled “Innovation – Creating Hong Kong's Digital Future,” which will take place on 25-26 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

According to Lee, information technology in all its forms – hardware, software and telecommunications – has long been one of Hong Kong's strengths, putting the HKSAR on the map as a world financial centre and a regional business hub.

“The key to retaining this position and building a prosperous digital future will be the innovative use of technology throughout society. That includes the private sector where new services can boost efficiency and competitiveness, the public sector where it can promote involvement in government and provide access to services, and in our daily lives," he said.

The upcoming HKICC conference will provide a forum where stakeholders – business, government and IT professionals – can showcase successes and debate developments in keynote sessions and parallel tracks covering four broad areas:
    - Future Lifestyles
    - Next Generation Communications, Technologies and Services
    - IT Applications for the Community
    - Financial Services and Security

The HKICC is an annual event organised by the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS). Its goal is to bring together IT professionals and business and government leaders from all over the world to explore the opportunities that information technology can offer, sharing successes and insight. More than 500 delegates attended last year's conference, representing a variety of local and overseas public and private sector organisations.

This year's conference promises to set a new benchmark for Asia's IT industry and the organiser is now accepting "Early Bird" bookings which include significant discounts for attendees who register before 13 August
2008 (see http://www.hkcs.org.hk/hkicc2008/ for details of the early bird offer).

"The conference has already attracted an impressive list of local and international speakers on a variety of issues that reach beyond IT and impact Hong Kong's main economic pillars. The guest of honour at the opening ceremony will be Frederick Ma Si-hang, JP, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the HKSAR," said HKICC2008 Programme Committee Chairman Professor Ching Pak Chung.

"Our key industries – Financial Services and Insurance, Transportation & Logistics, Hospitality and Tourism as well as Property development and Management – already rely on world class IT for everything from day-to-day services to enhancing their competitive edge. As the pace of technological development continues to accelerate, it is critical that Hong Kong continues to embrace, innovate and create a prosperous digital future,"
said HKICC2008 Organising Committee chairman Bernard Chan.

"HKICC2008 will offer participants an opportunity to discuss the big issues and help direct where technology is taking Hong Kong," said Chan.
