  • Sun Strengthens China's Disaster Recovery Capabilities with Powerful, Mobile Sun Modular Datacenter; Donation Benefits China National Disaster Reduction Center

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 19, 2008 ) HONG KONG – Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced the donation of its Sun Modular Datacenter (Sun MD) to the China National Disaster Reduction Center (CNDRC) in an effort to help the Chinese government build a world-class satellite disaster reduction application system. Under the direction of the China Ministry of Civil Affairs, the CNDRC is tasked with improving national comprehensive disaster reduction work through its collection and analysis of disaster information, timely on-site support, and disaster analysis and scientific research. Scott McNealy, Chairman and Co-Founder of Sun Microsystems was in attendance to formally donate the Sun MD to Dou Yu Pei, Vice Minister, China Ministry of Civil Affairs and Zou Ming, Department Chief, Disaster Relief Department and Director.

"Sun's donation of the revolutionary Sun Modular Datacenter demonstrates its deep concern for the welfare of the Chinese people, especially those affected in the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake this past May. As a prominent company, Sun realizes its commitment to social responsibility. We are grateful for their generous support," said Dou Yu Pei, Vice Minister, China Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The Sun MD is the world's first virtualized data center and provides rapid, easy deployment, high-density computing, and high energy efficiency in order to meet data center expansion and mobility requirements. The Sun MD integrates computing, storage and networking in an enhanced 20' shipping container with cooling capacity, monitoring and a power splitting system which is easy to deploy and widely applicable in an outdoor setting such as disaster-stricken areas. Since its introduction, the Sun MD has been applied in multiple fields, including manufacturing, education, health care, scientific research and telecommunications.

At the CNDRC, the Sun MD will be used for back-up storage and management of data and applications including environment and disaster monitoring and forecasting. As the data acquired through satellite remote sensing increases dramatically, the CNDRC is undertaking the construction of a small satellite application system that will provide hundreds of Gigabytes of data each day. The Sun MD will be employed as the backup subsystem in order to meet its reliability and security requirements. The CNDRC also plans to deploy the new datacenter to manage severe disasters and provide platform support for strategic decisions at the disaster control command center.

"China has placed great emphasis on disaster reduction and control because it directly affects the well-being of our citizens. In the process of building the national disaster reduction system, especially the satellite disaster reduction system, the adoption of the latest and most suitable information technology plays a critical role in ensuring the system will prove a success. The Sun MD boasts cutting-edge technologies which will prove indispensable after its integration into the disaster reduction system platform now under construction," added Mr. Dou.

Scott McNealy said, "Sun places great emphasis on its commitment to corporate social responsibility and being an active, contributing member of the business community in China. We are very glad to see that the Sun MD can help provide the datacenter platform support to enhance the China National Disaster Reduction Center's capacity for disaster analysis and scientific research."

Today's donation is another example of Sun's commitment to social responsibility in the country. In May, Sun employees raised more than one million RMB ($140K US) to the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. Since its entry into China in 1987, Sun has contributed to the building of several Hope schools in Sichuan and other provinces and improved the study environment for almost 3000 students.

"As a fast growing major economy, China faces challenges that require creative solutions, as the country strives toward comprehensive development," said McNealy. "Sun is an ideal partner to help introduce new technologies and innovations that can be deployed in China's drive towards modernization. China can be an early adopter of such technologies as its business and public sectors continue to search for ways to keep growing and developing the country."
