(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 25, 2009 ) HONG KONG – Following an appearance at InfoSecurity 2009, TippingPoint is holding security briefings in Hong Kong that will provide IT and security executives the information and tools to thwart top network attacks and emerging threats. As part of the Asia Pacific seminar series, TippingPoint is also conducting press briefings to announce several strategic partnerships and product releases.
Security in Greater China remains a hot issue. A recent study by the BSA and IDC found that China received the highest percentage of PC shipments in 2008, which in turn drove a significant increase in pirated software in that region. In addition, TippingPoint ThreatLinQ has uncovered a significant amount of data on the state of network security in China, including:
The highest number of attacks originating from Hong Kong in the last 90 days was February 12 with over 70,000 filter hits picked up; 11th April saw 32,000 hits.
New attack vectors mean that customers need to be more vigilant than ever. Vulnerabilities are exploited by SQL injection attacks and viruses can now spread via USB devices and social networking sites.
Scammers working in the business of distributing fake malware and detection software operate like a genuine sales organization with incentives and commission. In a recent example linked to Conficker, top earners could make US$330,000 per month and compete for the top prize of a Lexus.
The list of top attacking countries over the last 30 days shows how prevalent the problem is in this region – China has 16.9 million filter hits (this means our IPS field boxes have been hit 16.9 million times by China-based attacks) Thailand was 4.32 million and the USA 800,000.
David Endler from TippingPointÂ’s DVLabs research team will lead the seminar, which will discuss these trends as part of the current threat landscape in the Asia Pacific region. DVLabsÂ’ security research team is the benchmark of vulnerability and security research in the industry. Providing the security intelligence behind TippingPointÂ’s products, the DVLabs team consists of world-renowned security researchers that apply their cutting-edge engineering and analysis talents in their daily operations. The TippingPoint team will also discuss highlights from the Zero Day Initiative, a program that rewards researchers for responsibly reporting discovered vulnerabilities.
In addition to the seminar presented by DVLabs, TippingPoint will provide an overview of its latest technologies and partnerships that will provide users the tools necessary to combat threats. This will include information on recent news including:
New Product Availability – Information will be provided about the TippingPoint 10 IPS, an intrusion prevention product designed specifically for remote and branch offices, and Web App Digital Vaccine® service, a custom filter service that helps organizations prevent threats from compromising Web applications.
Strategic Partnerships – The company will detail its partnerships with leading vendors such as Critical Watch where the joint solution provides customers more comprehensive vulnerability assessment and mapping to DVLabs filters.
Industry Excellence – TippingPoint will share information from recent analyst reports that list the company as a leader in the both IPS and NAC markets.
