  • Georges St. Pierre promises not to fake anything

    (EMAILWIRE.COM, May 20, 2010 )
Newport Beach, CA - GSP, never the subject to controversy other than a accusation of extra Vaseline on his face by former champion BJ Penn, his actions in and out of the ring make him a no-brainer in terms of mentor and coach for the next Ultimate Fighter (TUF). As far as the UFC's tag line, "As real as it gets," no one is more fitting then GSP himself, in fact he could be the UFC poster boy. MMA fans paint a different picture for his opposing coach for the next Ultimate Fighter.

However fitting GSP might be, one must question the choice of Dana White in allowing allowing Josh Koscheck to be the opposing coach. Although there are no clear cut requirements to being a champion other then beating everyone in front of you and be a law abiding citizen when possible, there are certain aspects the public relish and those they don't.
I think media has proved the use of steroids is frowned upon when breaking home records left and right. I believe it can also be said that athletes that cheat in other ways should be dealt with by either commissions or the governing organization or promotion. Is faking an injury to buy time to recover or to deliberately cause your opponent to lose points cheating in the sport of MMA?

After UFC 113 Dana White acted quickly in expelling Paul Daley from the UFC organization for hitting Josh Koscheck after the fight was over. Dana White had an advantage of addressing this because he was able to witness the negative press Strikeforce received the entire week before UFC 113. White did not discipline Josh Koscheck, however, and many MMA fans and fighters are questing why.

Joe Rogan, Dana White's veteran color commentator and respected MMA personality, seemed to think the root of the Paul Daley aftermath was a reaction to Josh Koscheck faking once again another injury during a fight which later, when reviewed by video, confirmed Rogan's reaction on the UFC 113 event. During the broadcast, Joe Rogan said, "Josh you better take a look at the tape and then get up off the ground." Announcing to the world that Josh didn't get hit and that he was faking. Rogan also quoted, "This is not the first time we have seen this from Koscheck."
So in the MMA world or home to the fastest growing sport in the world, should we reward pro athletes that have cheated in a significant shape or form be rewarded as being appointed to a mentor position to the younger athletes coming up in the sport? ProFightNetwork and MMABAY radio feel that the sport has come too far to make it an acceptable trend because it sends a ghastly message to the world. Even more so coming from arguably the leading organization in the sport of MMA, which of course is the Ultimate Fighting Championship or as most people know the UFC.

The list of MMA current and former champions without a blemish in the public eye are plentiful. Names such as Randy Couture, George St. Pierre, Anderson Silva, Uriah Faber, Rashad Evans, Forrest Griffin, Fedor Emelianenko, Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez, Mauricio Rua, Royce Gracie, and the list goes on. We mention this list to show there is a choice when picking our coaches and mentors. It can be viewed as a sign of little or no respect to fighters such as GSP if they are not in the proper company when appointed to a position of a leadership by viewers across the world.
