  • Web Courseworks Releases WADAÂ’s ‘Play True ChallengeÂ’ Into the Wild

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 20, 2011 ) Madison, WI -- The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and Web Courseworks Ltd. have released ‘Play True Challenge’ to the world’s most popular casual game sites including Kongregate, Newgrounds, and Mochimedia. Using traditional game mechanics, ‘Play True Challenge’ was designed to teach young athletes about the negative effects of doping and encourage them to compete in a doping-free sporting environment. WADA and Web Courseworks are leveraging the opportunity to expose ‘Play True Challenge’ and its valuable message to the estimated 200 million casual gamers online each month, as reported by the Casual Games Association.

‘Play True Challenge’ was officially launched at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, as part of the Play True Generation program and has been adapted in 10 different languages including English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, German, Korean, Italian, and Japanese. The game is a combination of engaging fast-paced casual gaming with “choose your own adventure” scenarios, and youth-oriented realism. The objective is to encourage young athletes to learn about risks associated with doping, while offering enough intrinsic motivation to interest them in repeated plays of the game.

Jon Aleckson, president and CEO of Web Courseworks notes “Releasing this style of educational game into the wild not only results in millions of game plays, but exposes our client’s mission and message to a vast audience they would not otherwise reach.“

The game recreates the challenges and pressures facing young athletes both in- and out-of-competition with two sides to the simulation: a sports game and a life-based adventure game. The competition, or “sport side,” of the game is a fun action sequence in which the player controls his or her avatar in a sporting event.
After competing in the sports game, the player moves to the “life side” of the game: a series of conversations and puzzles designed to create different plots and endings over multiple plays. The player can then make a series of choices to experiment with or act against doping. Through these choices, the player learns about sport consequences, doping control, athlete rights and responsibilities, and the ethical rationale for competing free from doping.

Clark Aldrich , renowned author and practitioner of building games and simulations for education and professional development was a consulting developer on ‘Play True Challenge.’ As a games and simulation designer, Clark has created some of the most effective, celebrated, and innovative "soft skills" simulations of the past decade, including SimuLearn's Virtual Leader global product line.

Aldrich also advises many of the world's most influential organizations (private and government), including the Harvard Business School Publishing, Microsoft, and Cisco, and serves on over a dozen boards, including with magazines and universities, on educational and business analysis projects.

Joe Rheaume currently a game designer at Three Rings Design, a corporation recently purchased by SEGA, was co-designer and lead programmer on the game. Rheaume is no stranger to developing games for the casual market. His game ChronoTron, released in 2008, was a member of the PAX 10 and was the only game of the PAX 10 to be developed in Flash. Joe has also been featured on the popular G4 television show, X-Play.
‘Play True Challenge’ was named a Silver Medal Winner at the 2011 International Serious Play Awards for its high standard of performance.

"WADA is very pleased with the recognition that Play True Challenge has received from the Serious Game Conference and the educational gaming community. We would like to thank Web Courseworks for working with us in the development of this interactive game and learning tool. Play True Challenge is a key tool in educating young athletes and young people in general around the world about the health, social and sport consequences of doping." - Rob Koehler, WADA Director of Education and Program Development

Web Courseworks has been proud to contribute to WADA’s mission to provide a framework for young athletes and their coaches to be leaders in promoting and ensuring clean sport. To learn more and experience ‘The PlayTrue Challenge’ – visit www.webcourseworks.com and www.wada-ama.org.
