(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 09, 2012 ) New York, NY -- Today’s benefits, challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurial patent owners will be discussed on Wednesday evening, February 15th, at “A New Age in Patent Liquidity: New Opportunities for Entrepreneurs,” an event organized by the MIT Enterprise Forum of New York City.
Patent sales have become headline news. Some recent examples:
- The "Rockstar" consortium, led by Apple, bid $4.5 billion for Nortel`s 6,000-patent portfolio covering smartphone technology.
- A few weeks later, Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12 billion, primarily for its smartphone patents.
- Patent aggregators such as Intellectual Ventures and RPX (a recent IPO) have become large buyers of patents and IV has become an active enforcer, as well.
- Funds have formed just to invest in patents, and financiers are eyeing new ways to trade shares in patent royalty streams.
Our panel includes representatives from patent aggregators, sources of capital, patent crowd-sourcing firms, and inventors who have commercialized their patents. They will share their experience and offer their views on the future of IP liquidity models.
Among the issues we will discuss:
- What are the strategies for monetizing IP
- How are transaction costs being reduced to create greater liquidity
- Is the market becoming more "rational"
- Are "non-practicing entities" growing from "trolls" to "IP VCs"
- Is this enabling businesses to negotiate fair royalties, with less litigation
- Is this helping inventors and entrepreneurs to profit fairly
- Are patents something technology entrepreneurs should bother with
- Can the little guy play
Panel Moderator:
- James Klaiber, Intellectual Property, Pryor Cashman LLP
Panel Speakers:
- Kevin Barhydt, VP, Head of Acquisitions, RPX Corporation
- Charles Kwalwasser, General Counsel, Quirky
- Sean Peace, CEO, The Royalty Exchange
- Richard Reisman, President, Teleshuttle Corp.
- Jorge M. Torres, VP, Silas Capital
Open to the general public, the event will take place at Pryor Cashman LLP, 7 Times Square New York, with a reception at 5:30pm and the program from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Admission is free to MITEF-NYC members, $50 for non-members, with an additional $10 charge at the door. For registration and further information: www.mitef-nyc.org.
