(I-SoftwareNews.Com, September 24, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- A fan of NASA’s Curiosity rover has created a high-definition reproduction of the craft’s recent Mars landing.
The three-minute video was crafted by Bard Canning, who enhanced each frame, added an audio track of his own making and then uploaded the video to YouTube.
“Working frame-by-frame, it took me four weeks to produce the video,” Canning wrote on YouTube. “It was a painstaking labor of love.”
Canning has produced a work that is “detail-enhanced, color-corrected, interpolated from the original 4 frames per second to 30 frames per second.” But he’s not the first. A visual effects editor named Daniel Fitch also has a re-creation of the Curiosity landing that he made from high-resolution images taken of the rover’s descent.
The landing module that carried Curiosity down to Gale Crater on Mars took photos on the way down.
Fitch said he downloaded most of the images recorded by the module, but he “interpolated” what was missing by using thumbnail data. His video runs at three times real time, but Canning said his proceeds at real time.
Curiosity’s landing on Aug. 6 was monitored by NASA’s Mission Control in Pasadena, Calif., and by viewers all over the globe.
