(I-SoftwareNews.Com, September 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A not-for-profit organization that compares software found that security software generally is capable of doing the job it is tasked to do, after an extensive and intensive survey was done on the capabilities of the products.
AV-Comparatives looked at security software available to Mac users, testing the overall installation specs, status, protection functions, and general protection to both Mac and Windows malware. The study looked at AVIRA Free Mac Security, ESET Cyber Security Pro, F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac, Intego Mac Premium Bundle, Kaspersky Security for Mac, Quick Heal Total Security for Mac, Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home edition and ZeoBit MacKeeper Internet Security.
The study had been started due to the recent malware attacks that have plagued apple devices increasing in recent years. Because of the surge of activity, Mac users can no longer consider the OS system completely secure as they once did.
“Seven of the products we have reviewed receive our Approved Security Product award. Unfortunately, we were unable to give Quick Heal Total Security an award, due to misses in the Mac malware test at the time of testing,” they concluded.
Which software works best for an individual is based on what one needs versus what they do not. Out of the two free products, Avira Security for Mac was considered the best and “an ideal choice for anyone wanting a good basic antivirus program for free,” while Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition features a “minimalist interface” that “may be best suited to expert users”.
Each was able to detect Windows malware and provided effective protection against all Mac malware.
The expensive end of the spectrum had the $80 Intego mac Premium Bundle, which “provides virus protection, a firewall, parental controls, backup, identity protection and privacy controls. VirusBarrier has a simple, modern interface, and protection against Mac malware is excellent.” The US$60 Kaspersky Security for Mac “includes parental controls and a virtual keyboard as well as antivirus. Its recognition of Mac malware is first rate, while interface design and help features are both of a very high standard. The program includes Windows malware detection.”
