Hong Kong – Symantec Hong Kong today announced that Baptist Lui Ming Choi Primary School has deployed a suite of Symantec security and backup solutions. The school, which has nearly 900 students and over 50 faculty members, selected Symantec Endpoint Protection to protect its data and Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery to shore up its backup and recovery processes. Today, the school has realised a twelve-fold reduction in backup time, and is able to recover a complete Windows-based system in minutes.
Baptist Lui Ming Choi Primary School is well-known for providing Hong Kong students with a high-quality education. Its IT system interfaces with the Hong Kong Education Bureau's Web-based School Administration and Management System (WebSAMS), which helps the Hong Kong Government oversee member schools throughout the territory. Adhering to the requirements of this system makes information management and data protection crucial for Hong Kong schools, but it can also add to the workload of IT co-ordinators.
Until recently, Baptist Lui Ming Choi Primary School backed up its server to tape, a process that was found to be neither efficient nor reliable. Administrators began to worry about possible ramifications of failure-prone server backups and the risk of viruses on client computers.
"One of our issues was that we were only able to back up one year’s worth of data. Also, because backups took two to three days to complete, the school was only able to back up Web¬SAMS data once a week," said Dick Wong, the school's IT co-ordinator, who also teaches Chinese, math, and computer science. "Because our data changes all the time, we really needed to be able to back up on a daily basis. Even worse, was that backups failed 50 per cent of the time with no notification whatsoever."
The school selected Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery to capture and protect its entire Windows-based system - including operating sys¬tem, applications, databases, files, device drivers, profiles, settings, and registry - in one easy-to-manage recovery point without disrupting user productivity or application usage. The new solution enables the school to recover a complete Windows-based system in a matter of minutes, to different hardware and remote locations. Furthermore, Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery has solved the school's inability to perform regular and timely Web¬SAMS data backups by backing up the data every night to a network-attached storage (NAS) device. The backup takes only six hours - a twelve-fold reduction compared to its previous tape system.
Baptist Lui Ming Choi Primary School also turned to Symantec to gain control over its endpoints. Although it never experi¬enced a serious virus outbreak, several schools had experienced issues, and without a proper solution in place, the school felt it could easily be next.
"Symantec Endpoint Protection was naturally our first choice be¬cause it is so widely used and so well re¬garded," Wong said. "We looked at a number of competing systems but ultimately, we found that Symantec Endpoint Protec¬tion provides by far the most comprehensive protection for our systems, ensuring students and faculty have secure, safe access to the internet and applications. The solution even extends protection to endpoints users often bring in themselves, such as USB sticks and external hard drives.”
"With limited IT resources available at the school, we recommended a solution that would work in a relatively hands-off fashion, but without compromising effectiveness," said Michael Chue, managing director, Hong Kong, Symantec. “In the end, Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery has improved the efficiency and usefulness of the school's backup and recovery function enormously – and best of all – it works automatically, meaning there are very few resources required to oversee its operation. Meanwhile, Symantec Endpoint Protection has brought the school's security to a new level, ensuring threats cannot disrupt students or faculty from carrying out their work."
