  • Smartlesson educational web application goes beta

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 19, 2011 ) New York, NY -- When a New York high school calculus teacher searched for an easy way to save and share his class smartboard files and couldnÂ’t find what he was looking for, he knew there had to be a better way. Ballston Spa High teacher, Wayne Akey, wanted a way to easily share his daily smartboard files with his classes. Repeatedly he searched, but each time came up empty. With nothing else out there to fulfill his needs he decided to build it himself.

Mr. Akey wanted a method that was very simple to share smartboard files online, and be able to quickly do do it once class ended, without the need to login to a website. He decided that the best way would be to email the smartboard lesson files directly to a web application. So that was the starting point for the development of an application, and the Smartlesson.com idea was born.

Akey, also having a business interest related to information technology, enlisted his long-time business associate Gene Krause to manage the development of the Smartlesson application. “Aside from the core idea, we decided to develop an application that was somewhat similar to social software, yet maintaining an academic environment,” said Krause. The Smartlesson application allows teachers to email their smartboard files to the application, and when the application receives them they are deposited into a teacher’s page and appropriate class folder. The Smartlesson application provides students the ability to not only view or download the files, but also the ability to collaborate with the class on the lesson files. Assignments can be added to files, which appear in the student’s calendar, as well as parents of the student. It’s a wonderful tool for both teachers and students. If a student misses a class due to illness, it’s almost as though they can replay the class using the Smartlesson application.

Currently the Smartlesson application is in beta testing with a few schools. Teachers who are interested in taking it for a test drive are encouraged to contact the Smartlesson team to obtain a registration code. How much does it cost? Not a single red cent! “We decided almost from the outset that the core of the application would be made available to teachers and their students at no cost, said Akey. My other business venture is funding the development of Smartlesson and its ongoing support costs.”

So what’s next for Smartlesson? Krause said “Our focus now is on creating an ecosystem that is collaborative and provides learning utilities within the Smartlesson application. Right now we’re looking at embedding math software that will allow students to learn and perform complex math problems within the application for a given assignment. We envision using apache wave technology or something similar to achieve google wave functionality and associated third party applications. We want the application to make a difference in the learning environment.”
