(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 30, 2012 ) Las Vegas, Nevada -- Sony announces the coming launch of two MirrorLink car stereos. The company says that the XAV-701HD and XAV-601BT will be absolutely compatible with smartphones from Samsung.
In this yearÂ’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony puts up XAV-701HD and XAV-601BT on display. Although these two upcoming Bluetooth enabled car stereos, which were actually prototypes, had a few minor issues that need working on, they still did not fail to impress the attendees of the said show.
The XAV-701HD features a seven inch touch screen display while the XAV-601BT has a 6.1 inch touch screen. Developers promise that they will pack a good array of stereo features in these two new products. Since these devices will go by the MirrorLink standard, consumers should expect better interoperability between the consumerÂ’s phones or other mobile devices and their cars through Bluetooth.
MirrorLink is an industry standard that was introduced back in September of 2011. It is the product of the concerted efforts of consumer electronics companies, mobile handset manufacturers, and leading auto makers. Both car systems and smartphones that are enabled with this connection can be linked allowing access of the smartphoneÂ’s features on the carÂ’s panel.
As expected, Sony is not the only consumer electronics company that is jumping into the MirrorLink bandwagon. Both Sony Ericsson and Samsung are said to introduce smartphones that have MirrorLink support. The expected launch is said to be within the second quarter of this year.
Both the XAV-701HD and XAV-601BT prototypes that were out on display were a bit frustrating to use, although they did deliver the MirrorLink support as promised. It allowed the users to use their smartphoneÂ’s navigation, several apps, and the music player. One of the obvious flaws that people can observe at the onset was a noticeable lag in the touch screen response.
Another problem that was reported by those who tried both these units was that customers were able to launch apps unintentionally as they scroll from one screen to the next. Of course, since these are prototypes consumers should expect further improvements to be made by the time that these products hit the shelves in stores everywhere.
On a related note, Nokia also brought out their own MirrorLink enabled offerings. As expected, the interface was functional and the navigation was kind of flashy. The expected price range for such devices will go from $550 to $700. Some of the features that will be packed with such upcoming devices include quick links to parking, traffic, and the local weather.
